Justin Fields de-commitsThe nation’s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback is back on the market.
Justin Fields backed off his pledge to Penn State late Tuesday, a decision that weighed heavily on him for some time.
Fields’ father, Ivant Fields, told SEC Country the recruiting process has not been easy for Justin, who has more than 40 scholarship offers.
“I think he’s a young man and has his whole life ahead,” Fields said of his son. “A lot of times you second-guess whether this is the right decision.”
Fields has several suitors, most notably Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and LSU. His father is very involved in Justin’s recruitment but won’t make the decision for him.
“We’re letting Justin work that out within himself,” Fields said. “It’s part of being a man — evolving. He’s a young man on the brink of being a man, so he has to figure that out.”

Fields’ father spent 23 years with the Atlanta Police Department and retired as a sergeant. He now works as the resource officer at Justin’s high school (Harrison) in Kennesaw, Ga.
Fields has a close relationship with his 5-star son, who’s quiet and reserved during media interviews but shows a different side of his personality at home.
“Justin has a sense of humor nobody knows about,” Fields said. “He always keeps the house going and lets his hair down around our family.  Of course, I think I’m the closest person to him in the world.
“He’s a hard worker. His work ethic is a little over the top sometimes. He’s human and makes mistakes, but overall he’s a great kid.”
